My Dinner with Richard Chamberlin
Aloha,
I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share with you a story I have never shared in public before. This story is all about my dinner with actor Richard Chamberlin, who passed away a few days ago. Richard Chamberlain was known for his roles in Dr. Kildare and the hit 1980s television miniseries "Shōgun" and
"The Thorn Birds."
This meal took place many years ago at his beachfront estate in Hawaii. My wife, Charlene, was invited to Richard Chamberlain's House by her cousin Claire, a good friend of Richard's, and Richard's partner, Martin. Charlene called me and said, "I'm at Richard Chamberlain's house. Do you want to come over for dinner? “Yeah, of course, I'll be right there.” I excitedly drove over to his fabulous
Beachfront Estate.
Upon my arrival, I was warmly greeted by Richard and the other guests. One of them was an Aristocratic Italian woman, a close friend of Richard’s, who was cooking the meal. She prepared a wonderful Italian feast featuring pasta and other delicious Italian delights.
The food was extraordinary, authentic, and delicious. During our dinner conversation, she asked me about my ethnicity, and I explained that I was of Italian descent. “All four
of my grandparents came over from Italy”, I explained. She was charmed and warm about that. She asked me if I had any dishes that I cooked, and I said, "Well, I make a very good eggplant parmesan and I make pizza."
“Pizza?” she said. “Pizza is for peasants. It's peasant food. No one eats pizza—only people with low incomes who are from lower classes.” Richard smiled quietly and diplomatically, not wanting to cause any ruckus
during dinner. I didn't make a big deal out of it. I went along with whatever she said. However, I soon realized that some people had a negative attitude towards pizza.
Aristocratic Italians once viewed pizza as a food for the lower classes.
For me, Pizza is a universal food enjoyed by everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic status. But I distinctly remember her comments. That pizza was just for peasants. I wish I could meet with her today to explain that pizza
has become one of the most desired foods in the world. I'll never get a chance to talk to her again. However, her attitude toward pizza is for peasants, disturbed me.
After dinner, we gathered around the kitchen to clean up and wash all the dishes, then put everything away. The conversation was pleasant, although I felt somewhat insulted by this very aristocratic lady and her pizza comments.
For the record, know that pizza is not just for peasants
but for everyone, whether you're aristocratic, poor, or in between. Pizza is a universal food. There are no ethnic limitations or economic limitations to pizza. Long live pizza, the magical disk that makes things happen.
